Primarily the papers of James Harrison Williams (1836-1903) of Winchester and Woodstock, Va., and his wife, Cora DeMovelle (Pritchett) Williams (1840-1927), who worked for the Confederate War Department in Richmond, Va., and later served as principal of the Shenandoah Female Institute in Woodstock. James Williams' papers include a diary, 1862, kept during his service in the Confederate Army of the Valley in Virginia and West Virginia, kept in an account book, 1801-1826, of his father, Philip Williams (1770-1846) kept as clerk of court for Shenandoah County, Va.; and correspondence, 1861-1889, mostly with his wife. Letters, 1860-1883, to Cora Williams are from various family members. The collection also contains a pamphlet about the Shenandoah Female Institute, as well as materials documenting James Williams' political career. There are a few letters, 1861-1863, from the Williams' son, George Henry Williams (1844-1863), to his sister, Mary Julia (Williams) Wagner (1846-1930), written during his service in the Confederate Army, and scattered papers pertaining to other family members.
